Seklerland (Szekelyfold) - A one day trip in
The program is
aimed at leading our guest into the traditional and largely
undisclosed way of life of the inhabitants of Seklerland /
Szekelyfold. Seclerland (Székelyföld)
is an island of Hungarian speaking population in the geographical
center of Romania, with a distinct culture and traditions, mostly
unchanged during the centuries.
In Praid (Parajd) the participants will visit the Salt Mine, one of the
most important natural treasures of the area. In the large
underground halls a church, a playground and a library are maintained
for the visitors, who would like to spend more time here.
Lunch will be served in
Praid at noon.
Next location to be
visited on our roadmap is Criºeni
(Korispatak), where we can have an insight in the
centuries old occupation of the inhabitants of this small village,
the manufacturing of straw-hats. Here we will also visit the
straw-hat museum. While driving to Criºeni we will see along
the way, a "monument" of Romanian Communism, a church tower
standing out from the middle of a lake, a belonging to a village
flooded by the communists in order to make an artificial lake on it's
Our next stop is in the
area of Lupeni (Farkaslaka), where we make a short stop to
observe work of the charcoal-burners, a very traditional and
special occupation of the people from this village.
is Énlaka, a well hidden Sekler village, which due to its
remoteness has preserved its architectural and cultural heritage in
its original form, dating back to the fourteenth century. Following a
walk on the narrow streets of the village, and after serving a
traditional snack, we can visit the only buffalo farm of Seklerland.
Énlaka the participants will be transported back to Odorhei,
where they are invited to participate on a traditional Székely
evening, with traditional food being served and folk music played by
a well known local Gypsy folk-band
