Hiking in the Harghita

Hiking in the Harghita Mountains - a full day program

The Madarasi Harghita, is one of the highest peaks of the Harghita Mountain range, being the remains of a once strato-volcanic crater. The crater has measured a width of 5 kilometers. From this area springs the longest running mountain creek of the region, the Vargyas Creek. The Madarasi peak is often being mentioned as the Seclers Saint Mountain.

The Program:
9.00: start driving with a small bus from the Marton Aron (Patko) square from Odorhei / Szekelyudvarhely.

9.30: arrival to the Ivo junction, participants being accommodated in the Ivo valley are invited to join here

At The Ivo junction we change transportation to a tractor pulled open trailer, which will carry the group up to the Madaras Cabana, the starting point for the hiking. The rough mountain road leads through a beautiful pine-grove forest.

11.00: arrival to the Madaras Cabana, where the guest will be welcomed by a traditional oven baked bread-snack. Following a small rest the group will start walking up to the Harghita Madaras Peak (1801 m). The hike takes about a 1 / 1.5 hour. At the top the participants can enjoy the full panoramic view of the Harghita Mountains. In good weather even the Fogaras Mountain range is also visible from this altitude.

Following a half hour rest, the group will walk back to the Madaras Cabana, with a small detour to a beautiful water-fall. The hike is about a 1.5 hour walk, including the detour. At the Cabana a traditional 3 course "highlander" lunch is served.

16.00: traveling down to the foothills of the mountain with the tractor pulled trailer.

The trip will be closed by the awarding of the Harghita Survivor prize to our most daring guests.
